A Long-Term Vision for Digital Sovereignty, Education, and Community

At the Linux Association of Canada, we believe that open-source software is about much more than technology—it is about creating opportunities, strengthening communities, and empowering Canadians to take greater control of their digital future.

That is why we are excited to share continued progress on one of our most ambitious initiatives yet: Linux for Canada.

Rather than being a single project, Linux for Canada is a long-term national program that brings together a series of initiatives designed to make Linux, open-source software, and digital skills more accessible to people across the country.

Building More Than Software

Over the past few weeks, the Association has launched several key national services, including:

  • Canada's National Linux & Open Source Job Board
  • Canada's Open Source Software Library
  • Our Linux Distribution Library with more than 400 distributions
  • The Free Refurbished Computer Program
  • Support for Linux User Groups and local chapters

Linux for Canada builds upon these foundations by expanding our focus from technology to people.

Our goal is to ensure that Canadians of all ages and backgrounds have access to the knowledge, tools, and opportunities that open-source software can provide.

Programs Under Development

As the Linux for Canada initiative continues to grow, we are developing several new community programs, including:

Free Linux Training

Helping beginners make the transition to Linux through accessible learning resources, workshops, and practical guides.

Digital Literacy Workshops

Providing hands-on sessions that build confidence using computers, open-source applications, and essential digital skills.

School Outreach

Working with educators and schools to introduce students to Linux, open-source software, and collaborative technologies.

Senior Technology Assistance

Supporting older Canadians with patient, practical help so they can confidently navigate today's digital world.

Newcomer Digital Inclusion

Helping newcomers to Canada gain access to technology, develop digital skills, and discover free software that reduces barriers to participation.

Open Source Education Resources

Creating a growing library of educational material that anyone can use to learn Linux, open-source software, privacy, and digital security.

Privacy & Cybersecurity Awareness

Promoting safe online practices while encouraging the adoption of privacy-respecting and open technologies.

Already Making an Impact

Some of these initiatives are already underway.

Our Computer Refurbishment & Donation Program is now live, allowing donated hardware to be refurbished with Linux and provided free of charge to qualifying schools, charities, community organizations, and individuals who need access to technology.

Likewise, our growing collection of educational resources continues to expand as we build Canada's most comprehensive national platform dedicated to Linux and open source.

Supporting Digital Sovereignty

A central goal of Linux for Canada is to promote digital sovereignty.

We believe Canadians should have meaningful choices when it comes to the technology they use. By encouraging open standards, open-source software, education, and community collaboration, we hope to help reduce dependence on proprietary ecosystems while supporting innovation made here in Canada.

Digital sovereignty is not simply about software—it is about ensuring individuals, organizations, and public institutions have the freedom to choose technologies that best serve their needs.

A Community Effort

None of this would be possible without the support of our members, volunteers, Linux User Groups, community organizations, sponsors, and partners.

Linux for Canada is designed to grow with the community. As new volunteers join and new chapters are established across the country, additional programs and services will continue to be developed.

We are only at the beginning of this journey, but the enthusiasm and support we have already received give us great confidence in what we can achieve together.
