Linux Mint project Clement Lefebvre revealed today in the adopted a longer development cycle for new Linux Mint releases, starting with Linux Mint 23, which is currently planned for Christmas 2026, packed with lots of goodies like a new screenshot tool for the Cinnamon desktop environment that supports cropping and multi-monitor support.

The upcoming Linux Mint 23 release will also bring improvements to Nemo, Cinnamon’s file and desktop manager, such as better response time and folder navigation performance, as well as a filtered view to Nemo’s Interactive Search feature to make it more obvious and comfortable.

“When you start typing, the entry is now added to a search bar which looks much more obvious than before and doesn’t disappear when you stop typing or when you click away,” said Clement Lefebvre. “The view gets filtered to only show results so you can see them all at once and no longer need to jump without knowing where you’re going to land.”

In addition, the Cinnamon desktop environment is getting support for draggable Clutter dialogs, which stay on top but don’t lock the screen and can be moved around, better support for GTK3 dialogs, improved colors and contrast in the dark version of the Mint-Y theme, and support for WPA3 and Opportunistic Wireless Encryption (OWE).

These, and probably many other improvements to come, will be included with the upcoming Cinnamon 6.8 desktop environment, which will be the default in Linux Mint 23. Cinnamon 6.8 is currently under heavy development, and so is Linux Mint 23, which will be based on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and powered by Linux kernel 7.0.
