The Linux Association of Canada is pleased to announce the adoption of formal guidelines for Linux distributions seeking inclusion in the Association's Distribution Library.

The Distribution Library serves as a resource for users, educators, businesses, government organizations, and members of the wider open-source community who are looking to discover, evaluate, and learn about Linux distributions. As the Linux ecosystem continues to grow and diversify, clear and transparent listing criteria help ensure that the library remains a trusted and useful reference.

The newly established guidelines are designed to balance inclusivity with quality. The Linux Association of Canada recognizes the important contributions made by large enterprise-backed distributions, community-driven projects, specialized distributions, and emerging Canadian initiatives. The goal of the guidelines is not to determine which distributions are "better" than others, but rather to ensure that listed projects meet a minimum standard of legitimacy, accessibility, and ongoing maintenance.

To be considered for inclusion, a distribution should:

  • Be based on the Linux kernel.
  • Be legally distributable and compliant with applicable software licensing requirements.
  • Maintain a publicly accessible website, repository, or project presence.
  • Provide installation media or download access for users.
  • Demonstrate evidence of active maintenance or development.
  • Identify project maintainers, sponsors, or a responsible community where applicable.

The Association will also maintain classification categories to help users identify distributions by purpose, including general-purpose desktop systems, enterprise platforms, educational distributions, privacy-focused projects, lightweight systems, embedded solutions, and historical or archived projects.

By establishing these guidelines, the Linux Association of Canada aims to improve the discoverability of Linux distributions while providing users with confidence that projects included in the library are active, identifiable, and relevant.

The Association welcomes feedback from distribution maintainers, community members, and industry stakeholders as the Distribution Library continues to evolve. Linux distributions that meet the published criteria will be encouraged to submit their projects for inclusion and review.
