KDE Plasma 6.8 is coming later this year as the next major update to the beloved desktop environment for GNU/Linux distributions, and it’s a special release as it will coincide with KDE’s 30th anniversary on October 14th, 2026.

Some of the biggest changes, so far, in KDE Plasma 6.8 include triple buffering for NVIDIA GPUs enabled by default, support for recording audio in Spectacle during screen recording, and automatic logic support for Plasma Login Manager on distros with older systemd versions, such as KDE neon.

KDE Plasma 6.8 also promises support for the Flatpak version of Microsoft Edge in Plasma Browser Integration, the ability to configure wireless access points to automatically select a channel in the Networks page in System Settings, and better detection of dark GTK 2 themes and applying a matching icon theme.

There is also good news for users with multi-monitor setups, as KDE Plasma 6.8 will identify monitors with color-coded number badges in all the places they’re configured to make it easier to see which one is which, especially when you have two identical monitors, and faster adjustment of brightness on external monitors.

The Plasma System Monitor app received some goodies too, such as support for the Intel Xe driver, the ability to measure VRAM usage as a percentage of the total, and support for assigning processes to specific CPUs or groups of CPUs.

KDE Plasma 6.8 also promises to let you set up wallpaper slideshows that don’t change automatically, display notifications about connected devices that have low battery power in full-screen apps, and support version 1.6 of the Emulated Input system for better integration of virtual keyboard, mouse, and touch input devices.

On top of that, KDE Plasma 6.8 improves the lock screen to notify you when the “Slow Keys” accessibility feature is enabled, updates the Emoji Selector app to Unicode 17 to give you access to lots of new emojis, and improves the Peek at Desktop and Window Aperture effects to respect the system-wide animation speed setting.

Another interesting change is that KWin, Plasma’s window and composite manager, will now automatically apply a shadow, outline, and corner rounding effect to CSD (client-side-decorated) windows that lack these, such as Steam and Discord.

Talking about KWin, it now internally only uses OpenGL ES to ensure that it will always be working. According to the KDE devs, OpenGL ES is necessary for Plasma to work on some old GPUs, and it also turns out to be sufficient for everything KWin needs. This will be replaced with Vulkan in a future KDE Plasma update.

The final release of the KDE Plasma 6.8 desktop environment is expected on October 14th, 2026. Until then, a first beta development version will be available for public testing on September 10th, followed by a second beta on September 24th. Under the hood, KDE Plasma 6.8 will depend on KDE Frameworks 6.30 and Qt 6.11.
