Building a Stronger, More Independent Digital Canada

Open source is no longer a niche technology reserved for enthusiasts or software developers. It powers the internet, secures financial institutions, drives scientific research, enables artificial intelligence, and supports governments around the world. Every day, millions of Canadians rely on open-source software—often without even realizing it.

As Canada continues to invest in digital innovation, cybersecurity, education, and economic growth, open source has become more than a technology choice. It is a strategic asset that can strengthen our country's digital future.

At the Linux Association of Canada, we believe the time has come to make open source a central part of Canada's technology strategy.

Open Source Already Powers the World

Some of the world's most important technologies are built on open source.

Linux powers the majority of the world's servers, cloud infrastructure, and supercomputers. Android, the world's most widely used mobile operating system, is built on the Linux kernel. Kubernetes, PostgreSQL, Firefox, Blender, LibreOffice, Nextcloud, and thousands of other projects demonstrate that collaborative development can produce software trusted by businesses, universities, governments, and researchers worldwide.

Open source is no longer an alternative. In many sectors, it has become the standard.

Why Canada Should Care

Canada has an opportunity to strengthen its digital future by embracing technologies that promote innovation, flexibility, and long-term sustainability.

Open source supports several national priorities:

Digital Sovereignty

Organizations should be able to choose technology based on their needs rather than being locked into a single vendor's ecosystem. Open standards and open-source solutions provide greater flexibility, encourage interoperability, and help organizations maintain greater control over their technology choices and data.

Innovation

Open-source communities encourage collaboration across industries, universities, non-profit organizations, and businesses. Rather than reinventing solutions independently, organizations can build upon existing technologies while contributing improvements back to the community.

Economic Growth

Every dollar spent on recurring software licensing is a dollar that cannot be invested elsewhere.

By reducing unnecessary licensing costs, organizations can redirect resources toward Canadian jobs, staff training, local support services, cybersecurity, research, and innovation.

Education

Students entering today's workforce increasingly encounter Linux, cloud computing, containers, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity platforms built upon open-source technologies.

Providing students with exposure to these tools helps prepare them for careers in one of Canada's fastest-growing sectors.

Sustainability

Open-source software often extends the useful life of existing hardware, reducing electronic waste and lowering technology costs for schools, charities, municipalities, and community organizations.

Building Canada's Open Source Community

Technology alone is not enough.

A thriving open-source ecosystem depends on people who are willing to learn, teach, collaborate, and share knowledge.

Across Canada, Linux user groups, educators, volunteers, developers, and technology professionals have spent decades building welcoming communities that help newcomers discover Linux and open-source software.

The Linux Association of Canada was created to strengthen those communities by bringing them together under a national organization that promotes collaboration rather than competition.

What the Linux Association of Canada Is Doing

Although still a young organization, we are already working to build a stronger national open-source ecosystem.

Our initiatives include:

  • Building Canada's National Open Source Library.
  • Supporting Linux user groups and community chapters across the country.
  • Expanding our School Outreach Program to introduce students and educators to open-source technologies.
  • Publishing educational books, articles, and learning resources.
  • Offering Training & Workshops for individuals and organizations.
  • Providing Open Source Advisory services to help businesses, educational institutions, non-profit organizations, and public sector organizations evaluate and adopt open-source solutions.
  • Connecting Canadians with Linux and open-source employment opportunities through our national Job Bank.

Every initiative shares the same goal: making Linux and open source more accessible to Canadians.

Collaboration Makes Us Stronger

Open source has always succeeded because people work together.

That same spirit guides the Linux Association of Canada.

We are proud to collaborate with respected organizations across the open-source ecosystem, including Rocky Linux, CIQ, the Linux Professional Institute, Perforce, community Linux user groups, educators, volunteers, and technology professionals who share our vision of a stronger Canadian open-source community.

We also welcome opportunities to engage with public institutions, educational organizations, industry leaders, and government partners who recognize the value of open standards, digital skills, and collaborative innovation.

Looking Ahead

Canada's digital future will depend on more than technology.

It will depend on education, collaboration, openness, and the willingness to invest in solutions that empower people rather than limit them.

Open source offers an opportunity to build technology that is transparent, adaptable, secure, and designed to serve the needs of Canadians.

The Linux Association of Canada is committed to helping make that future a reality.

Whether you are a student taking your first steps into Linux, a business evaluating open-source solutions, an educator inspiring the next generation, or an experienced professional looking to give back to the community, there is a place for you in Canada's growing open-source movement.

Together, we can build a stronger, more innovative, and more digitally independent Canada.
