Systems Administrator - Part time (ID #5572)
New Value Solutions
Full Job Description
New Value Solutions (NVS) is a national IT and cybersecurity consulting firm based in Burnaby, BC. We are taking on the managed IT service for an industrial and marine group with a site in Port Alberni. We are searching for a Systems Administrator in Port Alberni to be our hands on the ground. The is a part time contract role, on an as needed basis.
You are the local technician for one client site: a small office and yard with a server, a firewall, switches, Wi-Fi and about a dozen users, plus two marine vessels alongside at the harbour. You work under the direction of our Lead Engineer, who is on the phone or on a remote session with you while you work.
Responsibilities:
•Walk through the site once a month: server room, UPS, firewall, switches, access points, printers and cabling. Photograph, note anything wrong, and update the asset list in our ticket system.
•Attend the site within 2 hours on a business day when something is down and a physical action is needed: restart a server, firewall or switch, check power and cabling, confirm the internet connection, swap in a pre configured spare device we keep on site.
•Swap and set up hardware with the engineer on the line: replace a failed device, unbox and connect a new PC built from our standard image, replace an access point or a firewall.
•Help with the tugs when they are alongside at Port Alberni, and occasionally at Nanaimo: connect shipped devices, replace a firewall or an access point on board, and take photographs for our records.
•Record every visit in a ticket with the time spent, what was done and photographs.
Requirements:
•Based in or near Port Alberni, with a vehicle and a valid driver’s licence.
•At least two years of hands on experience with Windows PCs, printers and small business networks. Comfortable in a server room. SonicWall or Aruba experience is an asset, not a requirement.
•Able to follow a written procedure and a remote engineer’s instructions exactly, and to say so when something does not match the procedure.
•Reachable by mobile phone during business hours and able to get to the site within 2 hours on a call out.
•Able to lift 20 kg and work in a yard and on a vessel.
•Clean criminal record check and a signed confidentiality agreement.
•Professional and courteous with site staff
