Canada has long been recognized as a country of innovation. From artificial intelligence and cybersecurity to aerospace and telecommunications, Canadian researchers, entrepreneurs, and technology professionals continue to make significant contributions on the world stage.
Yet, much of the software that powers our governments, businesses, schools, and non-profit organizations comes from a relatively small number of proprietary vendors. While these products have an important place in Canada's technology landscape, relying too heavily on closed platforms can limit flexibility, increase costs, and make organizations dependent on technologies they cannot fully inspect or control.

More Than Free Software
One of the biggest misconceptions about open source is that it is simply "free software."

Linux runs the majority of cloud infrastructure, the world's fastest supercomputers, countless web servers, and billions of mobile and embedded devices. Technologies such as Kubernetes, PostgreSQL, Python, and many artificial intelligence frameworks are all open source and are trusted by organizations worldwide.
Open source has become the foundation upon which much of today's Internet is built.
Strengthening Canada's Digital Sovereignty
In recent years, digital sovereignty has become an increasingly important topic in Canada.
Digital sovereignty refers to a country's ability to maintain appropriate control over its digital infrastructure, data, and critical services. As governments and organizations continue moving more operations online, ensuring resilience, security, and independence has become a strategic priority.
The Government of Canada has recognized that using open standards and open solutions can improve interoperability, reduce dependence on proprietary technologies, and provide greater flexibility when designing digital services. Open technologies also make it easier for organizations to choose solutions that best meet their needs without becoming locked into a single vendor's ecosystem.
Open source does not replace every commercial product, nor should it. Instead, it expands the choices available to organizations and encourages healthy competition based on quality rather than exclusivity.

Across Canada, Linux User Groups, community organizations, educational institutions, and volunteers are introducing people to open-source technologies through workshops, meetups, conferences, and mentoring programs.
These communities help newcomers develop practical skills while creating valuable professional networks. Many successful careers in software development, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and system administration began with contributions to open-source projects.
Transparency Builds Trust
Transparency is another important advantage of open source.
Because the source code is publicly available, it can be independently reviewed by developers, researchers, security professionals, and organizations around the world. While simply being open does not automatically make software secure, public review allows vulnerabilities to be identified and addressed through broad community collaboration rather than remaining hidden inside proprietary code.
This openness also encourages accountability and helps organizations better understand the technologies they rely on.
For public institutions in particular, transparency supports greater public confidence in digital systems and services.
Supporting Canadian Organizations
Open source is not just for developers.
Businesses, municipalities, schools, charities, healthcare organizations, and government departments can all benefit from adopting open technologies where appropriate. Every organization has unique requirements, and open source should be viewed as one option within a broader technology strategy—not an all-or-nothing replacement for proprietary software.

By supporting open standards, encouraging contributions to open-source projects, investing in digital skills, and fostering partnerships between industry, education, government, and communities, Canada can strengthen its digital future while reducing unnecessary barriers to innovation.

The future of Canadian technology will not be built by one organization or one company alone. It will be built by communities working together—and open source provides one of the strongest foundations for that future.
