Every year, thousands of perfectly usable computers, monitors, and technology accessories are replaced long before the end of their useful life. While businesses upgrade their equipment and individuals purchase newer devices, many of these systems still have years of reliable service left to offer.

At the same time, students, seniors, newcomers to Canada, non-profit organizations, and families across the country often struggle to access affordable technology.

The Linux Association of Canada believes these two challenges can become one solution.

Our Hardware Donation Program helps extend the life of technology by accepting donated computer equipment, refurbishing it where appropriate, and preparing it for a second life with modern, secure, open-source software. By reducing electronic waste and improving access to technology, we help create opportunities for learning, communication, and digital inclusion.

Why Hardware Donations Matter

Access to a computer has become essential for education, employment, communication, and everyday life. Whether completing school assignments, searching for employment, attending online appointments, or simply staying connected with family and friends, reliable technology is no longer a luxury—it is a necessity.

Unfortunately, not everyone has access to the equipment they need.

By donating hardware that is no longer required, individuals and organizations can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others while helping reduce the environmental impact of electronic waste.

One computer that might otherwise sit unused in storage can become an important learning tool for someone else.

What We Accept

We welcome donations of equipment that can continue to provide value after refurbishment or redistribution.

Whenever possible, donated systems should be in reasonable working condition. Even if a device requires minor repairs or upgrades, it may still be suitable for refurbishment.

Refurbishing with Linux

Every computer deserves the opportunity for a fresh start.

Many older computers struggle to run modern commercial operating systems, even though the hardware itself remains perfectly functional. Installing Linux often transforms these systems into fast, reliable, and secure computers suitable for everyday use.

Where appropriate, donated computers are carefully evaluated, cleaned, tested, and prepared with a beginner-friendly Linux distribution along with a collection of free and open-source applications. This gives recipients access to everything they need for everyday computing, including web browsing, office productivity, email, multimedia, education, and communication.

Our goal is not simply to recycle hardware—it is to restore its usefulness.

Responsible Data Handling

We understand that protecting personal and business information is one of the biggest concerns when donating computers.

Before donated storage devices are reused or redistributed, every effort is made to securely erase existing data using recognized data sanitization methods. When secure erasure cannot be completed or verified, storage devices are destroyed or replaced before the equipment is provided to a new user.

Protecting donor privacy is an important part of our commitment to responsible technology stewardship.

Environmental Responsibility

Electronic waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world. Extending the life of existing hardware reduces unnecessary waste while making better use of valuable natural resources.
